Mother Jones, the person, was born in 1837. In 1867 a yellow fever epidemic struck, killing her husband and 4 children. In the late 1890’s, in her 60’s, she become politically active. She was a famous and charismatic organizer for the United Mine Workers. In the early 1900’s Mother (Mary) Jones was one of the most famous women in America. She battled corporate presidents and politicians, went to jail repeatedly for organizing workers and converted tens of thousands of Americans to the labor movement and the left. Mother Jones argued that only strong democratic organizations of citizen-activists could achieve real egalitarian change.
