“On being American: Much has been given us, and much will rightfully be expected from us……”, a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican President (1901-1909), who was the leader of the progressive movement. He championed his “Square Deal”, promising fairness for all citizens and used the Sherman Antitrust against 43 corporations, earning him the nickname “trust-buster”. He regulated corporations and started government’s role in interstate commerce. His administration established the Food and Drug Administration and many of our national parks and forests. The Teddy Bear is named after him. Another famous quote: “It is not the critic who counts….the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly….who errs, who comes short again and again who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”
