Progressive Foreign Policy Isn’t Anti-American

Right-wing pundits routinely portrays progressive Democrats as fringe, anti-American radicals, using the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as a stand-in for the entire progressive movement. But DSA’s roughly 120,000 members represent only a small fraction of the nation’s 45 million registered Democrats.

Fox News engages the most provocative DSA voices and portrays them as representing the broader Democratic coalition. The purpose is to create a false narrative that distracts from the real issues surrounding Trump’s failed foreign line the endless war of choice with Iran.

The ultra-right American Enterprise Institute argues that progressive proposals to reduce defense spending would weaken America. But questioning whether taxpayers should continue funding obsolete weapons systems, wasteful contracts, or inflated Pentagon spending is not inherently anti-American. A modern national-security strategy can prioritize emerging threats, diplomacy, cybersecurity, and technologies relevant to 21st-century warfare while demanding accountability for every defense dollar.

There is also a broader question of credibility. During the Trump administration, the United States has seen its diplomatic capacity weakened while Trump has repeatedly cultivated relationships with authoritarian leaders including Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. His policies have strengthened Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, given the Netanyahu government broad latitude in for the genocide in Gaza and their war in Lebanon and ceded diplomatic and strategic ground to China.

America’s strength is not measured solely by the size of its military. It also depends on strong alliances, effective diplomacy, economic power, democratic institutions, and the ability to lead through cooperation.

Progressive foreign policy should be debated on its merits, not dismissed through guilt-by-association attacks designed to make every progressive Democrat answer for the most extreme voices on the political left.
