Memorial Day, Medicaid, and Trump's Big Lie

Memorial Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives to protect our democracy. Their sacrifices demand more than fleeting praise — they require action, respect, and policies that care for those who serve and their families.

Republicans often claim they “support our troops,” but actions speak louder than slogans. Former President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” backed by Republican allies, tells a different story. More than 2.7 million active-duty service members and veterans — along with 3.4 million of their children — depend on Medicaid for basic health care. But in the dead of night, Republicans pushed through a $700 billion cut to that very program.

That’s not support — it’s betrayal.

Trump, who has repeatedly shown contempt for military service by calling fallen soldiers “losers” and “suckers,” is once again turning his back on those who risk everything for our country. These cuts go beyond numbers. In rural America, where many military families live, slashing Medicaid means shuttering hospitals and stripping communities of vital care. Veterans and their families lose access not just to doctors, but to dignity.

On Memorial Day, we must remember that honoring our fallen isn’t just about parades and flags. It’s about policy. It’s about truth. Trump and his Republican enablers say they support the troops, but the evidence tells another story. It’s not patriotism — it’s part of the Big Lie.
