Political Violence Is Not A Both Sides Issue

To be clear, political violence in all its forms is abhorrent, and those who commit it must be held accountable in a court of law. But the ongoing surge in political violence and domestic terrorism is not a “both sides” issue.
Last week, FBI Director Kash Patel removed a report from the Bureau’s website that clearly stated, “the number of far-right attacks continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism,” and that far-right extremists “have committed far more ideologically motivated homicides than far-left or radical Islamist extremists.”
The report concluded that “domestic far-right extremists pose an acute threat, [driven by] long-standing ideological grievances related to immigration, and narratives surrounding electoral fraud will continue to serve as a justification for violent actions.”
Trump and his MAGA followers propagate lies that distort this reality, scapegoat the left, and suppress fact-based law enforcement assessments. His threat of retaliatory violence against the “radical left” have set the stage to normalize political violence as an acceptable tool within the MAGA movement, ensuring its continued escalation.
If we are to protect both democracy and public safety, we must address the threat of political violence and domestic extremism with honesty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law. Democracy demands nothing less.
