The Blue Wave Is the Beginning, Not the Destination
The Democratic Blue Wave is an opportunity, not the destination. Democrats should resist the temptation to make impeachment the centerpiece of the next two years. Accountability matters, but governing will matter even more if Democrats want to win in 2028 and beyond.
The post-midterm agenda should be clear: restore democratic institutions, strengthen the rule of law, and make government work for ordinary Americans.
That means restoring the protections of the Voting Rights Act and ensuring every eligible voter can participate. It means requiring the wealthiest Americans to contribute their fair share and closing loopholes that allow extreme concentrations of wealth to translate into political power.
It means structural reforms: establish 18-year terms for Supreme Court justices, followed by service on the lower federal courts; apply meaningful federal conflict-of-interest standards to the president and vice president; protect criminal prosecutions from political interference; and subject presidential pardons and commutations to Congressional review.
Congress should also use and strengthen its constitutional power of the purse by enforcing appropriations laws when a president attempts to withhold funds Congress has authorized.
Democrats should focus on building the democratic, accountable government that Americans deserve. Impeachment may make us feel good, but governing will put a Democrat in the White House in 2028.
