Today, as the specter of Trump 2.0 looms, even the hard right seems to recognize the chaos they helped create. AEI’s assessment highlights five key reasons
Trump is unfit to govern—and why a second term could be even more disastrous.
First, Trump’s leadership style is erratic and divisive. He disregards facts and avoids the hard work of governance. His lack of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, empathy, and relational skills—makes him incapable of uniting the country or running an effective administration.
Second, while Trump championed an “America First” agenda, he lacked a clear vision for public priorities. His impulsive nature left his administration unprepared for crises, and his inability to focus on long-term goals only deepened the chaos.
Third, Trump’s obsession with personal gain undermined his credibility. His insistence on loyalty above competence and his disregard for ethical norms made corruption and conflicts of interest defining features of his presidency.
Fourth, Trump attacked and weakened key institutions, from public health agencies to the courts and the military. His first term eroded trust in government and undermined the systems that keep the nation running.
Finally, Trump’s autocratic tendencies are counterproductive. His desire to surround himself with yes-men ensures that flawed policies go unchallenged, deepening the harm to the country.
AEI’s initial critique of Trump has proven prophetic. His first term highlighted his inability to govern effectively, and a second term threatens to amplify the damage.
As even conservative voices grapple with this reality, the question remains: will they act to prevent further chaos, or will they stand by as Trump 2.0 unfolds?
