The Death of Congressional Power Is The MAGA Plan

In today’s Washington, Congress’s irrelevance isn’t a tragic accident, it’s the nationalist’s plan. By prioritizing partisan loyalty over governance, MAGA Republicans cement Trump’s reign under a radical governing philosophy known as the “unitary executive.”

The philosophical underpinnings of the “unitary executive” rests on eliminating the traditional separation of powers and vests the president with almost complete control over the federal bureaucracy.

MAGA fealty to Donald Trump means that Republican legislators aren’t shaping policy. They’re engaged in performative politics and just like the court jesters of old, they are simply trying to please an irascible and petty king.

This MAGA brand of politics has turned Congress into a theater of grievance, outrage, and blind allegiance. Ironically, in their attempts to appease Trump and his base, MAGA lawmakers creating the very "deep state" they so loudly claim they oppose. Transforming the civil service into cadres of faceless Trump loyalist following not the rule of law, but the whims of an unconstrained president.

If Congress hopes to restore its relevance, it doesn’t just need procedural reform. It requires political courage. The courage to legislate. The courage to dissent. And the courage to place country above the cult.

Until that courage emerges, the MAGA-driven decline of congressional authority will continue, and the American people will bear the cost of a democracy diminished for generations to come.
