Trump Betrays Ukraine for Russian Diesel
To force Ukraine to stop striking Russian oil refineries, the U.S. withheld critical early-warning intelligence on Russian missile launches and temporarily cut military Starlink access for Ukrainian forces. This coincided with Trump’s economic concessions to Vladimir Putin.
Trump announced a social media deal for Russia to supply over 4 million tons of diesel. Minutes later, the Treasury Department issued a waiver easing sanctions on Russian diesel through April 2027.
However, this supply equals just six days of U.S. consumption. The move will fail to lower pump prices while handing Putin vital revenue that sanctions were designed to cut off, directly defying the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act.
While scapegoating Ukraine for high fuel costs and ignoring how the U.S.-led conflict in Iran drives global energy inflation, Trump unilaterally declared an "energy ceasefire" that caught President Zelensky off guard. Hours later, Russian missiles struck a Kharkiv power plant.
Ultimately, Trump is abandoning an ally defending its sovereignty in a desperate attempt to stave off a Republican midterm rout. By offering concessions to an aggressor, Trump sacrifices American credibility for short-term political gain, that will ultimately fail.
