When Enforcement Becomes Ethnic Cleansing

The recent surge in immigration enforcement against Somalis is political retribution, payback for Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar’s unapologetic criticism of Donald Trump’s cruelty, corruption, and contempt for democratic norms.
The assault is not limited to the undocumented. Somali American citizens, lawful permanent residents, and people who once lived under Temporary Protected Status have all been swept into a climate of fear. The withdrawal of TPS was not about safety or law, but about clearing the way for ICE to pursue people who had been living legally, working, and raising families for decades.
This is not about “the worst of the worst.” It is a coordinated effort to terrorize a visible minority community that does not resemble Trump’s MAGA base. Military-style ICE raids, racial profiling where “looking Somali” or simply being Black is enough, and deportations that bypass due process meet the moral definition of ethnic cleansing, even if the administration hides behind bureaucratic language.
The deployment of ICE agents into Somali communities in Maine only reinforces the charge that this agenda is rooted in white nationalism, not public safety.
When will it stop? And where are the voices in Congress and the Senate willing to stand up before an entire community is driven into silence and exile?
