The Trump’s Corrupt Venezuelan Oil Deal

President Trump’s announcement of the “BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY” is not a victory for American diplomacy. It is a masterclass in raw, institutionalized corruption. Behind the all-caps bravado is an imperial smash-and-grab that trades America’s moral authority and constitutional limits for black gold.

The corruption begins with the players. To move the oil, the administration partnered with Alejandro Betancourt, who built his fortune under the very Venezuelan regime the United States claimed to oppose. After Darren Woods, the CEO of ExxonMobil deemed Venezuela “uninvestable,” Trump bypassed the market altogether, using the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital to acquire a 35% stake in Betancourt’s firm.

Using the U.S. military as a state-funded private-equity firm to bankroll a politically connected foreign operator isn’t merely bad economics. It abandons any pretense of rule-of-law governance and turns national power into a vehicle for private enrichment.

Operation Absolute Resolve was sold as a law-enforcement mission to remove Nicolás Maduro. Instead, Maduro’s criminal network remains entrenched, Delcy Rodríguez has emerged as a compliant successor, and the Department of Defense has been transformed into the financial arm of an energy cartel.

By resurrecting the old plunderer’s creed “To the victor belong the spoils” the administration has turned extortion into foreign policy. Unilaterally seizing another nation’s resources under dubious legal authority will not lower prices at the pump or bring democracy to Venezuela.

It does something far more dangerous: it normalizes corruption as statecraft. Under Trump, Venezuela’s oil was never a means to freedom. It was the prize.
