Why is the Democratic Party leadership MIA?

mjpardus

The Democratic Party leadership seems to be missing in action when the stakes couldn’t be higher. Trump, a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist, is poised to lead the nation but Democratic leaders have failed to mount a robust and unified opposition.

Their silence allows Trump to control the narrative, presenting himself as having a mandate—something the election results don’t reflect.

While Trump’s policies are poised to harm everyday Americans, yet Democrats seem hesitant to draw clear battle lines. While it’s impractical to counter every outlandish claim Trump makes, the party must focus on dismantling his harmful policies and holding him accountable.

Mitch McConnell’s strategy against President Obama was brutally effective. McConnell said “I'm going to take the majority and cut the president [Barrack Obama] off at his knees.”

Democrats should adopt a similar posture, not out of spite, but as a necessity to protect American democracy and values.

With a Republican-controlled House and Senate, Democrats may lack the numbers to block legislation outright. But under no circumstances should they support or enable Trump’s policies. Bipartisanship is not an option with MAGA Republicans who negotiate in bad faith and repeatedly renege on agreements. Senate Democrats must relentlessly challenge every cabinet nominee, exposing their flaws and voting no on confirmations.

The Democratic Party is the opposition now. They must own that role with vigor and conviction. Trump and MAGA Republicans need to be held responsible for the consequences of their policies, with no Democratic fingerprints on the damage.

Leadership is about fighting for principles, even in the face of unfavorable odds. The Democratic Party’s leadership must stop being spectators and start being warriors for the American people. The time for silence is over.

Democrats need to lead—or risk irrelevance in a fight that demands their full commitment.
