FEMA Chief didn’t know the US had a hurricane season

As hurricane season begins, a chilling reality looms over millions along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts: FEMA may not come. Under the Trump administration, federal disaster response is being systematically dismantled — and the consequences could be catastrophic.

FEMA Acting Director David Richardson recently joked that he didn’t know the U.S. had a hurricane season. The Trump administration brushed it off as humor, but it exposed a deeper truth: dangerous ignorance at the highest levels of government. In typical Trump fashion, what should spark outrage is spun as a punchline.

Trump has already gutted critical agencies like NOAA, the Forest Service, and the Small Business Administration — key players in disaster preparation and response Worse, he proposed an additional $45 billion cut to FEMA, even as natural disasters grow more frequent and severe.

After public backlash over Richardson’s comments, Trump tried to backpedal by calling for increased funding. But don’t be fooled. FEMA aid still hinges on presidential approval of emergency declarations — and Trump has delayed or denied 17 such requests, including for tornadoes that killed 19 in Kentucky.

This isn’t leadership. It’s abandonment. Trump has no plan, no urgency, and no empathy. When disaster strikes, the American people will be left to fend for themselves — because he simply doesn’t care.
