J.D. Vance: We No Longer Live in a Free Country

Not long ago, Senator J.D. Vance warned that if the IRS could target people for their beliefs, “we’d no longer live in a free country.” Ted Cruz once declared that weaponizing the IRS would be unacceptable, even under a Republican president. Marco Rubio called politically motivated federal targeting “third-world stuff.”

But that was then, this is now.

Under pressure from Trump, those same voices are conspicuously silent as he demands the IRS investigate Harvard and revoke its tax-exempt status—not for fraud or financial misconduct, but because he dislikes its views and diversity programs. Harvard’s president, Alan Garber, called it an unprecedented overreach “unmoored from the law,” violating free speech and civil rights protections.

Rather than defend principle, Republicans are bowing to Trump’s tantrums, sacrificing the very freedoms they once claimed to protect. The once independent IRS is now a feared political weapon in Trump’s hands.

What changed? Not the law. Not the Constitution. Just the party in power and the fear of crossing a vindictive ex-president.

The hypocrisy isn’t subtle; it’s blatant. When leaders abandon their values to appease one man, they don't just undermine institutions—they invite tyranny.

Yes, it has happened here. And it will keep happening—unless those who know better find the courage to speak up.
