The Recess Rush: War, Deficits, and Disruption

House Budget Committee Republicans just advanced a 20-14 framework for a third party-line budget reconciliation bill. The goal? Ram it through both chambers before the August recess—and the cost is staggering.

The resolution greenlights $95 billion in new, completely un-offset spending. Rather than focusing on everyday Americans, the lion’s share is going toward funding Trump's ongoing, unauthorized war with Iran. This includes $60 billion for Armed Services and $13 billion for Intelligence. Another $12 billion is earmarked for farm assistance to bail out agriculture from skyrocketing costs directly caused by the conflict.

To top it off, $10 billion is set aside to push elements of the controversial anti-voter SAVE America Act.

None of this is paid for. It could tack on over $100 billion to the national deficit, completely ignoring the outcry of fiscal hawks who wanted social program spending cuts to cover the bill.

By utilizing the reconciliation process, Republican leadership is funding a war and a voter suppression policy without allowing a real floor debate. With a floor vote scheduled for the week of July 20th, the clock is ticking. Contact your member of congress and tell them to vote NO on the Republican funding package.
