The Rule of Law is Dead, For Now

We can no longer talk about the potential collapse of the rule of law. It’s already happened. Under the guise of "law and order," Trump cronies like Ed Martin, head of DOJ’s Weaponization Working Group, have ended DOJ’s independence. The damage may be irreparable for generations to come.

The recent resignation of U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert is a stark example. After a five-month investigation, Siebert declined to charge New York Attorney General Letitia James with mortgage fraud due to lack of evidence. Trump publicly demanded, “I want him out.” Days later, Siebert resigned.

Trump’s replacement for Siebert? Lindsey Halligan, a former insurance lawyer and longtime MAGA loyalist with zero prosecutorial experience. Another Trump personal attorney serving inside DOJ.

Halligan’s appointment is an admission that law is a joke, that the distribution of power is all that matters, and that the DOJ and every other Trump-controlled institution should be used to elevate the power of a self appointed King.

The DOJ must serve the Constitution, not a president’s personal grudges. That principle is effectively dead, at least for now.
