Trump Promised to Deport the “Worst of the Worst” – So Where Are They?

Six months into his presidency, Trump’s Department of Homeland Security claimed that over 300,000 undocumented immigrants had been arrested. In reality, the number was closer to 100,000. So where are the remaining 200,000 he promised to remove?

Maybe Border Czar Tom Homan, FBI Director Kash Patel, or Attorney General are too afraid to track down the supposed violent criminals? Maybe they're too lazy? Or maybe there’s not as many as Trump said.

According to Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, this shortfall isn't surprising: “There just aren’t that many undocumented immigrants with violent records.”

Today, ICE detains nearly 59,000 people—but nearly 75% have no criminal convictions at all. Just 7% have been convicted of violent crimes, meaning that 56,000 detainees are far from being the “worst of the worst.”

And ICE refuses to say how many of those violent offenders were already serving prison sentences before being detained, raising doubts about the real impact of the raids.

“This isn’t about public safety,” says David Bier of the libertarian Cato Institute. “It’s about numbers and optics. Most of the people arrested are just trying to live and work.”

Trump promised to deport dangerous criminals. Instead, his policies have swept up thousands of peaceful workers and families – while the real “worst of the worst” remain largely a myth.
